Indonesia’s Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DJKI) says it has helped settle a trademark dispute between ASICS and a shoe shop through mediation, according to Antara on 2 October. The dispute concerned the alleged distribution and sale of ASICS shoes suspected of not being genuine. [1]

ASICS was represented by the law firm Hadiputranto, Hadinoto & Partners, and the shop, Toko Istana Sepatu / Zidane Sport, by its owner. Mediation sessions were held at DJKI in Jakarta on 15 and 22 September, and the parties reached a settlement. Its terms weren’t disclosed. [1]

The mediation ran under a new DJKI guideline (No. HKI-KI.08.03-11 of 2026) and a standard operating procedure for handling mediation requests based on complaint reports, both effective from 1 September 2026. DJKI’s acting Director of Law Enforcement said the agreement let the parties resolve the matter without going straight to litigation. [1]

This is worth watching. Against a small retailer, a criminal complaint or court action can be slow and out of proportion to the stock involved. A formal mediation route through DJKI gives brand owners another option, although without published terms it’s hard to say yet what it can deliver, such as undertakings or the destruction of stock.
