Malaysia’s Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) seized 27,495 packs of suspected counterfeit playing cards from three business premises in Sandakan, Sabah on 7 October, according to Sabah Media and the Daily Express. The goods were valued at about RM55,079. [1], [2]

Three KPDN enforcement teams carried out the raids, and representatives of the trademark owner were present to verify the goods. Three investigation papers have been opened under the Trademarks Act 2019 (Act 815). Neither report names the brand or mentions any arrests. [1], [2]

Sabah Media sets out the penalties under the Act. For a first offence, individuals face a fine of up to RM10,000 for each item, up to three years’ imprisonment, or both, and companies a fine of up to RM15,000 for each item. KPDN’s Sandakan enforcement chief, Joe Azmi Jamil, advised traders to make sure branded goods come from legitimate suppliers. [1], [2]

Playing cards aren’t an obvious counterfeiting target, which is partly the point. Because the fines under Act 815 are set per item, exposure adds up quickly when quantities run into the thousands. It’s also a reminder that KPDN enforcement, with the brand owner on site, is available in East Malaysia and not just around Kuala Lumpur.
