Thailand’s Economic Crime Suppression Division has seized more than 880 suspected counterfeit phone accessories and spare parts in searches at four sites: a phone-accessory shop in Bangkok’s Grand Suea Pa building and shops in Si Sa Ket, Surin and Buri Ram provinces. The goods were chargers, adapters, phone screens and shock-resistant cases, all bearing the trademarks of well-known brands. The Central Investigation Bureau announced the case on 9 October. According to police, the case began with the trademark owner, which found the parts and accessories being offered by online shops and filed a complaint with the division. Investigators traced the online sellers to storage and retail sites in the four provinces and obtained court search warrants. A representative of the trademark owner joined the searches. None of the reports names the brand. [1], [2], [3]
Police arrested one man, aged 56, who owns the Bangkok shop. He faces a charge of jointly possessing for sale goods bearing counterfeit or imitated trademarks registered in Thailand. Police say he admitted the goods were fake and said they belonged to a company, were imported from China and were sold below market price. Others linked to the case will be summoned. No values or search dates have been reported. [1], [2]
Police also warned that the accessories were low quality and below safety standards, with a risk of short circuits, electric shock, explosion and fire. [1], [2], [3]
Fake chargers are a safety problem as well as a trademark one, and police led with that here. As in other recent Thai cases, the brand owner’s online monitoring is what led officers to the shops.
